Brian McClellan: The Autumn Republic

The Autumn Republic is the epic conclusion to Brian McClellan’s Powder Mage trilogy, and I got my copy from Bol.com. After loving the first two books, I went into this one with high expectations; and girl, did it deliver.

What a conclusion. What an ending. What an absolutely amazing trilogy.
The Autumn Republic does not stop. From the very first page, it’s non-stop, full-steam-ahead action, and I loved every second of it. Brian McClellan ties up every thread perfectly, making this a very satisfying finale.

One of the biggest strengths of this series is its characters. I was especially thrilled that Nila got such a big role, her growth throughout the trilogy has been incredible, and her interactions with Bo were fun, thoughtful, and full of heart. But honestly? I loved every character and every story arc.
McClellan doesn’t overload you with too many POVs, so it’s easy to keep track of everyone. And because each character is so well-developed, you care deeply about all of them. They feel real, flawed, and deeply human.

McClellan’s writing is easy to read but impossible to put down. His style is straightforward and powerful, without any unnecessary fluff. I really appreciate that. There’s no overly flowery prose or meandering subplots; instead, you get tight, gripping action and real emotional depth.

The only negative I have is the recurring "deus ex machina" effect (characters or solutions arriving at just the perfect moment to save the day). It felt a bit too convenient at times and pulled me out of the story slightly. But honestly, that’s a small gripe in an otherwise perfect conclusion.

The Autumn Republic is a perfect conclusion to an amazing trilogy. It’s fast-paced, character-driven, and packed with heart, and a joy to read.

Brian McClellan: The Crimson Campaign

I just finished The Crimson Campaign, the second book in the Powder Mage series by Brian McClellan.
I got my book from Bol.com.

This book was non-stop action: gritty, gruesome, and thrilling from start to finish.

One of the things I loved most was the character development, especially for Nila and Bo. But the real star of this series is Tamas. I’m so glad we get to know him as a character and not just as someone who is talked about by others. He feels incredibly real, with his inner doubts, concerns, and faults. We can see his military genius at work. In fact, none of the characters are pure heroes; everyone has their flaws and merits (except for Vetas, who felt a bit like a caricature).

The writing is easy to read but hard to put down. Brian McClellan’s style is straightforward and to the point, without unnecessary frills, which I really appreciate, especially in epic and grimdark fantasy. I also love reading from multiple POV's; it makes the story and the world feel so much richer and more rounded.

Now, I already knew a lot of what was going to happen because I read the second trilogy, Gods of Blood and Powder, first, without realizing this series came before it. But even though I had all this foreknowledge, it didn’t detract from the suspense or the awesomeness of this book.

If I have one critique, it’s that Brian McClellan sometimes relies a bit too much on deus ex machina solutions. An ex-lover showing up in just the right city, Nila turning out to be something more than expected, and a few other minor events felt a bit too convenient. But honestly, that didn’t ruin the experience for me.

Brian McClellan: Promise of Blood

Promis of Blood is the first book in The Powder Mage series by Brian McClellan. This series is set before the Gods of Blood and Powder series, which I read (and loved) first. So if you have yet to start Brian McClellan's writing, I suggest you start here. And I suggest starting now because these books are amazing.

Promise of Blood reads like a lightning-fast adventure. I was never bored, constantly on the edge of my seat and always wanting more. There are no infodumps, but you still learn plenty about the world, the magic systems, and the characters in a way that feels natural and immersive.
I loved every moment. It was so fun to get to know the characters anew, especially since I’d already met some of them in the Gods of Blood and Powder series. We learn more about Ka-Poel, see the world through Tamas’ eyes, and get to know him better. Honestly, I enjoyed every character and every story arc. There aren’t too many POVs, so it’s easy to keep track of everyone, and because each perspective is so well-developed, you care about them all.
The story is fantastic; there’s so much going on but it never feels overwhelming. Instead, it stays interesting and gripping from start to finish. The blend of magic and technology is so unique, and the political intrigue, action, and character dynamics make it impossible to put down.

I loved it so much that I’ve already ordered the second and third books in the series. If you’re a fan of epic fantasy with deep worldbuilding, complex characters, and non-stop action, this is a must-read.
