Ilona Andrews: Magic Slays

Magic Slays is the fifth book in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. I read this on my e-reader, though I’d love to own a physical copy of the series; if only I could find all the books in print!

I can’t really put my finger on why this book didn’t grip me as much as the previous ones. I enjoyed my time reading it, but I never felt compelled to keep going.
Magic Slays is just as fun, entertaining, action-packed, and fast-paced as ever; it just felt a bit off.

I thought there was too much going on mythology-wise. The addition of Baba Yaga on top of everything else felt a bit gimmicky to me.
I’m also not sure if I’ll enjoy the relationship between Curran and Kate now that they’re actually in a relationship. If they keep second-guessing each other, setting rock-hard boundaries, and then breaking them, it might get frustrating rather than romantic.

Still, Magic Slays was a solid entry in the series. It didn’t blow me away, but it kept me entertained. Have you read Magic Slays? Did you feel the same way, or did it grip you more than it did me? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Ilona Andrews: Magic Bleeds

Magic Bleeds is the fourth book in the Kate Daniels series by writing duo Ilona Andrews.
I read this on my e-reader.

This was a whole lot of fun!

Ilona Andrews excels at blending humor, romance, and action, and Magic Bleeds delivers on all fronts. The worldbuilding is rich, the characters are compelling, and the plot twists keep you glued to the page. From page one, I was on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out where the story would go next. The dynamic between Kate and Curran is perfect; full of tension, humor, and heart, but never too sappy. 

If you’re looking for a series that balances kickass action with deep lore and slow-burn romance, Magic Bleeds is a must-read. I couldn’t put it down, and now I’m eager to dive into the next book!

Ilona Andrews: Magic Strikes

Magic Strikes is the third full-length novel in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Depending on the time I have left this year, I might squeeze in one or two of the Kate Daniels short stories. 😉
I read this one on my e-reader.

This book was so much fun! Seriously, I couldn’t put it down. I even stayed up way too late reading it after finishing my December and 2025 wrap-ups and my Favorites blog post (those are coming soon, by the way!). The story is just that addicting.

The Kate Daniels series just keeps getting better. 
The action is relentless, the worldbuilding is rich, and the characters are just so darn likable. Kate is still my favorite; brave, tough, sarcastic, and fiercely loyal.
Her dynamic with Curran is a highlight, and I love that their slow-burn romance isn’t full off flowery prose, over-the-top declarations, swooning, daydreaming, drooling, ... Instead, it’s grounded in real emotions; fears, hurt, anger, and heartbreak; which makes their relationship feel authentic. 
In the earlier books, some characters felt a bit shallow, but here, they really start to shine and feel like real people.
The Midnight Games were such a cool addition to the story. The action scenes are fast-paced and brutal, but they never feel gratuitous. The action never lest up, it's one thing after another with barely a moment to catch your breath. 
What I love most about this series is how well-balanced it is; there’s humor, love, action and high stakes, all wrapped up in a world where magic and technology clash. Plus, the family/friendship vibes with Kate’s few friends (and her growing bond with the Pack) just make it all the more satisfying.
I also really liked the introduction of monsters from different religions and cultures. It was a breath of fresh air.

Magic Burns is the second book in Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series. 
I read this on my e-reader.

This book was so entertaining; I enjoyed every minute of it! I loved all the characters, and the story was really engrossing. It’s packed full of action, humor, a bit of love, great magic, and fighting, truly everything you need for a fun read.
Kate Daniels is such a strong, sarcastic, and fiercely loyal protagonist, and her dynamic with the rest of the cast (especially the Pack) is just so much fun. 
The action scenes are fast-paced and thrilling, and the humor is sharp and witty; just what I love in an urban fantasy. Plus, the slow-burn romance and Kate’s interactions with Curran are perfect; they're fun and not too sweet.

Ilona Andrews: Magic Bites

 Hi everyone

I wasn’t sure I’d like the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews at first; I thought it might be too romantic for my taste. But after seeing so many great reviews, I finally decided to give the first book, Magic Bites, a try on my e-reader. 

"Kate Daniels is about to enter a world of gritty magic and dangerous mystery! Vampires, necromancers and mages abound on the city streets, with one kickass heroine in the middleFuture Atlanta is an interesting place to one moment magic dominates, and cars stall and guns fail. The next, technology takes over and the defensive spells no longer protect your house from monsters.Here skyscrapers topple under the onslaught of magic; the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, prowl through the ruined streets; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst for knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds. Kate Daniels likes her sword a little too much, and she has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she's spent most of her life hiding in plain sight. But when Kate's guardian is murdered, she must choose to do nothing, and remain safe, or to risk her life by pursuing his preternatural killer. Hiding is easy, but the right choice is rarely easy .." 

Magic Bites is action-packed, fast-paced, and full of cutting humor; exactly the kind of fun, energetic read I didn’t know I needed. Kate Daniels is a fantastic protagonist: tough, sarcastic, and unapologetically herself. The worldbuilding is rich and immersive, with a post-magic-apocalyptic Atlanta that feels different and exciting. And the side characters added plenty of depth and fun to the story.

That said, the plot and writing style were a bit predictable. The "cutting remarks" and snappy dialogue started to feel repetitive after a few chapters; I could see the jokes coming before they happened. The story itself also felt a little thin at times, like it was more about setting up the world than delivering a tight, self-contained plot.
Still, those minor flaws didn’t ruin my enjoyment. The action, humor, and world were enough to keep me engaged, and I’m definitely curious to see where the series goes next.
